Information! Using Debate for Pre-Service Learners
PRESENTER: Annie Heringer

January 25th - 15:00 to 17:00 (UK time)
LANGUAGE: English
ORGANISED BY: IATEFL BE
(Business English) SIG
TYPE OF EVENT: Online
event. Free for members of IATEFL, Non member price: 15 GBP
SUMMARY
Preparing for the world of business means
mastering some pretty advanced speaking skills in English: making persuasive
arguments, defending a position and tactfully proposing alternatives. Apart
from role-plays, how can pre-service learners practice using this type of
language? Debating is a fun, structured way to develop critical thinking skills
and practice public speaking. It teaches learners to listen carefully, examine
issues from multiple perspectives and formulate an effective response quickly.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to lead
a debate for a small-sized group of learners in the British Parliamentary
style, which favors logical arguments over rhetorical flair. You'll also be
introduced to debating-practice activities that can be done with any amount of
learners, developing skills that are transferable in nearly every job and help
boost the confidence of any English learner.
TITLE: “Do, Be, Have –
they’re all we need!” A spotlight on the Three Operator Model
PRESENTERS: Christopher
Walker
DATES & TIMES: Tuesday,
28th January 2025 - 16.00 (London time)
LANGUAGE: English
ORGANISED BY: Modern
English Teacher
TYPE OF EVENT: Free
Webinar
SUMMARY
We’ve all experienced the same thing – our
students throw up their hands and say, “How can I learn all 36 tenses in
English?!” From past perfect continuous to the passive voice, there’s a lot to
cover, and it can feel overwhelming for both teachers and students.
In an article in Modern English Teacher in
November 2023, Christopher Walker explained how you can take a completely
different approach, and look at the English verb system in terms of its three
principle operators – do, be, and have.
In this interactive webinar, we’ll look at
the Three Operator Model, and we’ll compare it to the way that course books
treat troublesome areas of grammar such as a short past simple action
interrupting a long past continuous action. If we embrace the Three Operator Model,
we might never have to hear our students complain about the weight of English
grammar again!

TITLE: TEASIG: Testing
language learners’ multimodal skills: why, what and how?
PRESENTERS: Tineke
Brunfaut, Judit Kormos
DATES & TIMES: Tuesday,
18th February 2025 - 17:00 (UK time)
LANGUAGE: English
ORGANISED BY: IATEFL TEA
SIG
TYPE OF EVENT: Free
Webinar
SUMMARY
Language use in today’s world is vastly
multimodal, not least because of technological advancements. For example, while
watching TV or YouTube, we may simultaneously be listening to speakers, see
their body language, look at the video footage and visuals, read phrases
highlighting key info, and then text a friend about what we saw. Essentially,
effective communication in social, educational and professional contexts
nowadays requires multimodal literacy. It is therefore important that learners
are given opportunities to develop their multimodal literacy and that teachers
can evaluate learners’ progress and abilities in this area.
In this webinar, we will share examples of
two types of multimodal integrated test tasks, which we developed and
investigated for use in English language classrooms. We will provide tips on
how such tasks can be made and show how learner performances can be marked. Our
materials will be freely available to webinar participants.

Lesson planning can be time consuming and,

Planning lessons that encourage learners to communicate, whilst differentiating

low-prep jigsaw video lesson idea that can engage learners in meaningful
communication.
In this interactive webinar, we’ll look at
the whats and the whys of jigsaw learning, particularly when using video. How
can we structure an effective jigsaw lesson and what are the benefits of using
this procedure? Why use video? And how can all this help with your lesson
planning? Join Rachel to find out!
