Session 1: Accessibility in the multi-level classroom

Speaker: Emily Bryson

12 February 2025 15.00–16.00 (UK time)

Every learner is different, and it is essential to adapt our lessons to meet everyone's needs. In this workshop, we will first explore specific learning differences as well as ways to overcome barriers to learning, such as developing literacy and digital skills. Then I will share simple teaching activities and tips that have made my own lessons more accessible, including using colourful and creative graphic facilitation techniques.

Session 2: Planning for learning (not teaching)

Speaker: Gabriel Díaz Maggioli

Time and date: 12 February 2025 16.15–17.15 (UK time)

What if we flipped the logic of lesson planning? Most of our daily planning focuses on what we want to do so that students achieve learning outcomes. However, how many times do we really put ourselves into our learners' shoes while planning? In this session we will explore how people learn and, therefore, how they might be taught. By the end of the webinar, you will have ideas on how to create learning-centred lesson plans, teaching and assessment strategies.

TITLE: TEASIG: Testing language learners’ multimodal skills: why, what and how?

PRESENTERS: Tineke Brunfaut, Judit Kormos

DATES & TIMES: Tuesday, 18th February 2025 - 17:00 (UK time)

LANGUAGE: English

ORGANISED BY: IATEFL TEA SIG

TYPE OF EVENT: Free Webinar

SUMMARY

Language use in today’s world is vastly multimodal, not least because of technological advancements. For example, while watching TV or YouTube, we may simultaneously be listening to speakers, see their body language, look at the video footage and visuals, read phrases highlighting key info, and then text a friend about what we saw. Essentially, effective communication in social, educational and professional contexts nowadays requires multimodal literacy. It is therefore important that learners are given opportunities to develop their multimodal literacy and that teachers can evaluate learners’ progress and abilities in this area.

In this webinar, we will share examples of two types of multimodal integrated test tasks, which we developed and investigated for use in English language classrooms. We will provide tips on how such tasks can be made and show how learner performances can be marked. Our materials will be freely available to webinar participants.

In this interactive webinar, we’ll look at the whats and the whys of jigsaw learning, particularly when using video. How can we structure an effective jigsaw lesson and what are the benefits of using this procedure? Why use video? And how can all this help with your lesson planning? Join Rachel to find out!
