Upcoming CPD Opportunities: Autumn
2024
It’s the beginning of the new academic year
(at least in this part of the world) and once again there is an abundance of (mostly
free, online) CPD opportunities offered by publishers and ELT institutions hoping
to attract our attention (and custom!).
There is some great stuff going on, so much
so in fact that it’s easy to miss something useful (by the latest count there are 14 events in September alone, and some events fall on the same day!). Last year I decided to keep
track by creating a blog post to list the events in date order, with links and
a little info on each. This proved very popular, so – one year on – here is the
5th in the seasonal series.
I update the posts as new events are published, but – as ever - if I’ve missed anything you think might be useful, please let me know in the comments.

SUMMARY
How can we integrate sustainability into
the English language classroom while supporting our students’ language
development? In this session, we will discuss how to use language and
project-based learning to help students engage with real sustainability
challenges and solutions while enhancing their critical thinking,
problem-solving and communication skills. Using the ‘Sustainable Life’ lessons
from Life, Third Edition as our guide, we will show that developing students’
language skills and tackling sustainability issues can go hand-in-hand in the
English language classroom. You will leave the session with practical ideas to
help your English language learners create positive change in their local and
global communities.

SUMMARY
The Inverted Classroom Model (ICM) requires
students to take responsibility of their own learning. It is a particularly
suitable method for teaching ESP since it fosters the exchange and sharing of
knowledge, aligning with the needs-based approach promoted for ESP.
Furthermore, this methodology requires learners to prepare for lessons, thus
allowing them to participate more actively in class. Online tools and learning
management systems can assist with creating more engaging pre-class activities. Essential Future skills such as teamwork,
critical thinking, and information literacy can easily be integrated into this
setting ensuring that students are prepared for the changing requirements of
today’s work world.
Gerlinde
Koppitsch is an ESP instructor for Engineering and
IT at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences, Austria. She holds an MA in
English Language Studies and is currently completing her dissertation on
fostering student engagement in higher education. Her research explores
innovative teaching methods, virtual exchanges, e-learning, and AI in teaching
and learning.

Who is this webinar for?
Please note that the content of this
webinar is tailored for teacher educators and teachers who are engaged in
facilitating the professional development of others.
What is this webinar about?
How can teacher educators help teachers to
think through and make sense of questions about the place of (varieties of)
English in relation to other languages? Questions of correctness and variety
choices and ownership of English; questions around native
speaker/anglonormative teacher language proficiency; questions around the
‘English only classroom’, multilingual approaches and linguistic diversity;
questions about the value, benefit and practice of English as the language of
teaching and learning.
Harry Kucha Kucha, Associate Professor of
Language, Social Justice and Education at the University of Birmingham, and
Tony Capstick, Associate Professor of Language and Migration at the University
of Reading, give their thoughts on this broad, multifaceted and contentious
theme and provide some approaches to helping teachers reflect on the many
associated questions.

SUMMARY
The mock test is an important tool for
learners and teachers in the exam preparation journey. A mock test can give
learners a true exam day experience, help the teacher understand the learners'
progress and decide if they are ready for their exam.
However, there is much more to explore.
When? Why? And what do I do with the results? This session will draw on the
experience of teachers and how they use mock tests to act as a guide to support
their planning to lead learners towards exam success.

Ellis is a Senior Manager of Assessment Services,

TYPE OF EVENT: Free
Webinar
SUMMARY
There has been a lot of speculation about the future impact of AI on language teaching and learning, but in this webinar I will talk about a live use of AI. I will discuss the creation of an automated speaking test, looking at the following questions in particular:
- How can a machine assess a learner’s
ability to speak English?
- Will its scores be as reliable as those of
a human?
- Can it assess communicative competence as
well as technical competence in pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, etc.?
I will talk about the way automated marking
works, how it compares with human marking, and how to address issues of
validity. I will discuss these questions in relation both to current research
and to what was learned during the design and development of ClarityEnglish’s
Dynamic Speaking Test, which was launched at IATEFL 2024.
Martin
Moore is an experienced publisher and creator of
language learning and assessment materials. He has worked in house for Oxford
University Press and Cambridge University Press, as well as on a freelance
basis for other major ELT organisations. He recently completed a master’s
degree in English Language Assessment at Cambridge University, with a dissertation
focusing on the reliability of mobile assessment. He works for ClarityEnglish
as project manager of their Dynamic Placement and Speaking Tests.

SUMMARY
Materials writing, materials development and materials use has been receiving increasing attention within ELT over the past couple of decades. We know that there is more and more research into how materials are written and developed, and how they are used by teachers and trainers, and we would like to give this a broader audience.
In this joint conference, MaWSIG and ReSIG
(the Materials Writing and Research Special Interest Groups) invite teachers,
writers and researchers to share their research into materials writing,
materials development and materials use. There will be both longer talks and
shorter poster presentations. Speakers will share their research and the
audience will be able to ask questions and consider how the research applies to
their own contexts.

SUMMARY
Are you a teacher educator looking to
enhance your skills in lesson observation? Join us for an insightful online
workshop focused on mastering the art of lesson observation and feedback.
About the Workshop:
During this engaging session, participants
will develop their understanding and confidence in key facets of lesson
observation. Our focus will be on identifying how to write useful lesson
commentaries, pinpointing actionable areas for improvement, and preparing for
productive post-observation conferences. Attendees will also have the
opportunity to observe a lesson firsthand, collaboratively analyzing its
strengths and weaknesses to deepen their understanding.
Why you should attend:
By the end of this workshop, attendees will feel empowered and equipped to conduct observations effectively within their specific training contexts, ultimately enhancing the quality of teacher education they provide.
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is ideal for early-career
teacher educators who have little experience with lesson observation, as well
as more experienced teacher educators who can share their knowledge and
experience and who may be looking for innovative ways of approaching commentary
creation and preparation for the post-observation conference.
