THE INTERCULTURAL CLASSROOM: WHERE EMPATHY AND LEARNING MEET

(IATEFL)

Free webinar

An IATEFL monthly webinar presented by Cecilia Nobre

In the context of our increasingly interconnected world, the role of intercultural competence in language teaching has never been more vital. This webinar offers insights into the effective fusion of intercultural language teaching principles with student-focused lesson approaches. Drawing on the works of Scarino (2013) and Liddicoat & McConachy (2022), we'll delve into the significance of genuine communication, emergent language, and the empowerment of learners. Participants will be introduced to reflective methodologies such as video-based discussions and practical judgement exercises, all aimed at deepening intercultural understanding and honing critical thought. The session will also advocate for the use of reflective journals, enabling students to self-assess and address potential biases. By the end of the webinar, participants will be equipped with pragmatic techniques to guide learners towards meaningful communication that is both culturally sensitive and articulate.

GLOBAL PRONUNCIATION – COMMUNICATING ACROSS BORDERS

(National Geographic Learning)

Free webinar

What is the best accent for students to aim for? A better question for teachers might be, “Who will my students be speaking to?” In many teaching contexts, there are people from many cultures and backgrounds that our students might encounter, so they need to be ready with clear pronunciation. How can we help them achieve this? In this webinar, National Geographic Learning teacher trainer Andy will discuss a new approach to a pronunciation syllabus that prioritizes global communication, so that students can be understood by a wide variety of people. Andy will discuss how this pronunciation approach was developed by expert authors, what content is included in this approach, and how it can be implemented in classrooms.

FIVE TIPS FOR DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ COMMINICATION SKILLS AND INTERCULTURAL SKILLS

(National Geographic Learning)

Free webinar

Perhaps you know that your students will use English to interact and build relationships with people from around the world and you already know that they will need skills that go beyond producing accurate vocabulary and perfectly grammatical sentences. And perhaps you are not sure how best to help students develop these skills in the language classroom. “I can teach grammar very well but I’m not an expert in communication skills and intercultural skills” or “I just get students to work in groups and hope that they accidentally pick up these skills” are some things I’ve heard teachers say.

But developing communication skills and intercultural skills does not have to be accidental and you might just have more expertise to do this than you realize. In this session, we'll look at five simple things you can do to help students master these crucial soft skills in a systematic way and prepare them for international communication, using examples from the Voices program.

THE ENIGMA OF LANGUAGE AND HOW TO TEACH IT

(Helbling)

Free webinar

If all children learn their first (or home language) with relative ease - and often more than one - how come it is difficult for some second language users to do the same? Is it something to do with how we are taught, the way we learn, how our brains are wired or how we are motivated? It is of course a mixture of all these and more, but how should writers of teaching and learning materials address this?  Well in the new edition of Jetstream we have tried to provide different things for different modes and stages because in the end everything depends on each individual. Our concern, therefore is to try and reach each of our learners. This talk will discuss how that is done and how it works - if it does (!) using practical examples.

Speaker: Raquel Ribeiro

Title: Generative AI & SGE: communicative experiences in the English language classes

Abstract:

-          AI-supported solutions in the field of English language teaching though much talked about, but not so well understood in terms of applicability within the challenges of the ELT classes.

-          How can generative AI be used in the English language classes in order to make a difference to the learning experience of the students?

-          What's the strategic importance of teacher development to gain confidence and expertise in using generative AI?

-          How can teachers deal with the hallucination issue and the limitations?

In this talk I intend to address the key features of generative AI that can be mobile friendly, beneficial and enhance the language learning experience of the students along with sharing my findings and strategies to integrate AI via BYOD mobile learning [both conversational and generative possibilities] to some classes along the course of a semester. Let’s differentiate between the mobile-friendly artificial intelligence tools and understand the suitability for the age ranges and CEFR levels (Common European Framework of Reference), in activities conducted during the class time and with the teacher supervision and guidance. The need of a strong pedagogical support and opportunities for the continuous professional development of the language teachers, along with a concern with accessibility and suggested action steps and data from the current 2023 GUIDANCE FOR GENERATIVE AI IN EDUCATION by Unesco will also be pointed out.

ASSESSING LISTENING NEEDS: BEYOND CORRECT ANSWERS

(Trinity College London)

Free webinar

In this webinar, we explore techniques for assessment in the listening classroom. To help students identify specific areas for improvement in their listening skills, we examine a cycle of goal-setting, problem diagnosis, and follow-up lesson techniques.

Beyond numerical scores on listening tasks and vague advice to practise further, what can we do to help our students set and reach their listening objectives?

In order to be truly responsive to emerging learner needs, we need tools to assess which areas need further attention in our later lessons.

In this webinar we take an assessment for learning approach to listening needs. We will look at a cycle of setting goals, assessing problem areas and setting follow-up tasks to address these areas. We will look at listening from a process perspective and examine often overlooked areas of decoding ability.

Presenter: Shaun Sweeney

Shaun Sweeney is a teacher and trainer with over 20 years of ELT experience. His key interests include listening skills, assessment and TBLT. Shaun has worked around the world in various contexts, with longer stretches in Italy, Spain, the UK, and Japan.

TESTING AND MEDIATION: WHAT IF THE TEST-TAKERS THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX?

(IATEFL TEASIG & ESPSIG)

Free webinar

Linguistic mediation appears to be a feasible test task in the fight to combat online cheating in tests for B2 students. It can be especially relevant in different areas of ESP where students need to be able to explain terms to laypeople because when mediating, language needs to be adjusted; definitions cannot be copied and pasted. The difficulty, however, comes when the task is to be evaluated. As mediation affords considerable freedom to the test-taker, some of the answers may be unexpected, inappropriate or simply incorrect. Can CEFR help us to assess these answers fairly?  Where do we draw the line between what is still acceptable and what is not?

Names and bios of the speakers:

Barbora Chovancová teaches English for Legal Purposes at Masaryk University Language Centre. She holds a PhD in English linguistics, having specialized in pragmatic aspects of courtroom interrogation. Apart from her extensive experience in ESP teacher training, she has also been active in the area of designing and developing ELT materials. Her professional interests include mediation as a language skill, counselling, and promoting autonomous learning in and outside the classroom.

Radmila Doupovcová teaches English for Legal Purposes at Masaryk University Language Centre in Brno. She is currently responsible for managing and coordinating the development of legal English tests. Her areas of interest include exploring different test approaches, evaluating test quality and ICT implementation in legal English courses.Text/Summary

PRONUNCIATION IN OUR CLASSROOM: MINI-EVENT

(British Council)

Free webinar series

About the event

This event on Friday March 22, 2024 will feature three webinars with expert ELT teachers from around the world. All webinars help English teachers think about how they teach pronunciation in the classroom. The webinars are for teachers of primary, secondary and adult English language learners.

About the webinars

Session 1: 11:00 - 12:00 (UK time) March 22, 2024 Variation not deviation: Encouraging tolerance of English diversity in ELT

Speaker: Gemma Archer (UK)

The prestige native speaker model is at odds with modern English which is a global, diverse, and dynamic language, used more by L2 speakers than L1. So how can we teachers make room for our students, and indeed, our own Englishes in the ELT classroom, move away from near-impossible goals of native speaker model replication, and instead, towards embracing and accepting clear intelligible international speech, regardless of the variety? I’ll suggest practical ways in which we can achieve this, encouraging students to embrace their L2 identity, accept rather than fear unfamiliar Englishes, and feel confident about their own English voice.

Session 2: 12:15 - 13:15 (UK time) March 22, 2024  It's not what you say, it's the way that you say it

Speaker: Kris Kirby (Hong Kong)

This webinar will give you some practical ideas to help you work with pronunciation in your classes. Pronunciation is probably the most neglected aspect of language taught in our classrooms. We often feel that grammar and vocabulary must take precedence and as such, pronunciation activities are either skipped entirely or rushed through quickly. Nonetheless, this aspect of language is essential for clear communication. In this webinar, we’ll discuss why pronunciation is so crucial to our students and we’ll look at some practical methods to raise their awareness of the way sounds in English are produced. Finally, we’ll tackle the tricky question – ‘Which type of English pronunciation are we aiming for anyway..?’

Session 3: 13:30 - 14:30 (UK time) March 22, 2024 - Honing your pronunciation teaching skills

Speaker: Ana Paula Biazon Rocha (UK)

This workshop will start by reflecting on some of the reasons why many English teachers struggle to teach pronunciation, namely lack of training in pronunciation teaching, lack of confidence in their own pronunciation, uncertainty about how to incorporate pronunciation into everyday lessons, inflexible curriculum, reduced access to pronunciation teaching resources, believing that pronunciation is learned incidentally, etc. Then, we will look at practical tips such as teaching word stress with your hands, articulating difficult sounds, using follow-up tasks to complement a pronunciation point presented in the course book, exploring online pronunciation resources, among others.

9th Annual Spring Research Conference: LANGUAGE LEARNING IN MULTILINGUAL CONTEXTS

(UIC: Universitat Internacional de Catalunya)

Conference (Face-to-face or online)

€30 Student fee in person*

€18 Student fee virtual*

€60 Standard fee in person

€36 Standard fee virtual

Since the 2014-2015 academic year, the Institute for Multilingualism has hosted the Spring Research Conference (SRC), an annual on-site research event held at UIC Barcelona. What initially started as a modest seminar has since evolved into an international gathering of scholars and experts growing in both quality and size with each passing year.

The SRC aims to provide academics with a platform for the exchange of innovative research in the realms of language teaching, acquisition and multilingualism. Our objective is to create a forum where researchers from various disciplines including linguistics, applied linguistics, cognitive science and psycholinguistics can gather and share their latest research and discuss developments in their respective fields of expertise. We seek to provide SRC attendees with an enriching experience fuelled by plenary speakers that never fail to amaze and the unique insights that only interdisciplinary discussions can provide.

The main lines of research conducted by the Institute for Multilingualism and the GRAM Research Group revolve around the analysis of different foreign language learning contexts and the influence of individual differences in the acquisition of second languages. Our research strives to further our understanding of the progression of multilingualism through naturalistic, immersion, and formal language acquisition approaches.

TEACHER EDUCATION AND PRACTITIONER RESEARCH – HOW CAN ONE SUPPORT THE OTHER?

(British Council)

A way of encouraging teachers to develop increased agency is through supporting them in researching their own practice and their own classrooms. Professor Richard Smith (Dept. of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick) discusses how teacher educators can support and mentor teachers to further develop their understanding, approaches and skills in relation to practitioner enquiry.

What do we mean by terms such as teacher-research, practitioner enquiry, Exploratory Action Research? How can we work with teachers-in-training and at the in-service level to influence positively teacher perceptions of research? What practical research skills do teachers need and how do teacher educators help teachers acquire them? What are some of the more innovative and accessible ways of disseminating teacher-research insight?

BECOMING A TEACHER: BEYOND TRAINING

(British Council)

Free webinar

Please note that the content of this webinar is tailored for teacher educators and teachers who are engaged in facilitating the professional development of others.

In a recent discussion, a teacher made this comment, 'Now that I’ve finished my teacher training, I know how to teach. But I still don’t know how to be a teacher.' This webinar is in part a response to that comment, which goes to the heart of teacher education.

Alan Maley, involved in language education for over 60 years, discusses the results of an informal, unpublished inquiry where experienced teachers were asked to recall a teacher from their past who they had particularly admired, liked and respected. They were asked to list the factors which led them to this conclusion. Overwhelmingly, it was personal qualities which dominated – of the five main characteristics only one referred to professional expertise.

Alan suggests that acquisition or developing these human characteristics is not susceptible to formal training and suggests a number of possible ways teacher educators can help teachers to acquire indirectly some of what seem to be desirable qualities – activities teachers can do alone and activities they can do with the support of others.

IS THE FUTURE PERFECT?

(Pavilion ELT)

Three-day online interactive festival (£10 administration fee)

The world of English language teaching is ever changing. New research, new ideas and new technologies all play a huge role, but have our teaching practices kept pace? How often do teachers give themselves a moment to stop and reflect on these changes, and how they impact their own teaching? And, how easy is it to find, understand and implement some of these changes in their teaching practices?

Our second annual three-day, online festival of English language teaching aims to help. Fantastic speakers will present on a wide range of different topics, as we explore some of the key changes and current themes in English language teaching. The first day will consider the types of people we are teaching, whilst the second day moves on to explore what we are teaching. Finally, Day 3 will round off the festival by examining the shifts in how we are teaching.

By the end of the festival, we will have celebrated the successes of change and creativity in global language teaching, teaching methods and techniques, understood more about who we are teaching and where ELT is headed and discussed what we need to do to be effective teachers of tomorrow.

Whilst we hope you will be able to join us across all three days of the festival, we also know that the dates and times might not work well for everyone. However, we are delighted that all the sessions will be recorded, and will be made available for everyone who has signed up! This means that you can watch all the sessions back later in your own time, all as part of the administration fee.

Current confirmed speakers: Jon Hird, Jill Hadfield, Sharon Ahlquist & Carol Lethaby
