CPD Opportunities Autumn 2023

 CPD Opportunities Autumn 2023

Upcoming CPD Opportunities: Autumn 2023

Following the success of my compilation of CPD opportunities in September over on EFL Takeaways, I thought I’d follow up with more upcoming events. Not quite the (over?) abundance of the September offer to coincide with the start of term, this aims to list events provided over the next couple of months (October & November, 2023).

Most of the content is free and online, but I’ll also expand the list to include face-to-face and (paid) conferences, so be sure to read the notes carefully. I'll add events as they come up, but if I’ve missed anything you think might be useful, please let me know.

STRATEGIES FOR ENGAGING SUSTAINABILITY LESSONS IN THE ENGLISH CLASSROOM

(National Geographic Learning)

Free webinar

Presenter: Daniel Barber

The urgency of protecting our planet is front of mind for students and teachers worldwide. But how can we incorporate sustainability topics meaningfully into our English language lessons? In this session, we will explore strategies to help teachers raise awareness about environmental issues in the English classroom and promote positive action among their students. Ideas range from quick and easy 'twists' to existing lessons, to engaging projects that encourage learners to be global citizens. Drawing on examples from National Geographic Learning programs, this webinar will equip you with practical tools to connect English learning with climate action. Together, let’s empower our students to make a positive impact on the world around them.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING, A PREREQUISITE TO WELLBEING IN CLASSROOM

(Eaquals)

Free webinar

Presenters: Zeynep Oğul & Sena Elibal İçuz:

The World Health Organization defines wellbeing as “a state in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. With this definition, it is reasonable to state that only with sustained wellbeing can an individual feel fulfilment and satisfaction in life.

In this workshop, the two presenters are going to start by referring to the literature to set the frame and then highlight the significance of social-emotional learning as the basis for the wellbeing state. Then, in an interactive fashion, the presenters are going to raise awareness about how essential social-emotional learning is in an attempt to promote wellbeing practices in the classroom. Finally, a list of useful tips to set a social-emotional learning setting, thus the basis for wellbeing in the classroom is going to be deduced together with the audience with the implicit message that to foster mass academic growth, there is urgent need for widespread practices such as embedding social-emotional learning objectives to the curriculum rather than addressing to day-to-day wellbeing needs of the individuals.

ACTIVE LEARNING METHODOLOGIES – MINI EVENT

(British Council)

Three free webinars

This event will feature three webinars with ELT teachers and experts from around the world. All three webinars will help English teachers think about how they plan activities and lessons that involve active learning methodologies. The webinars are for teachers of primary, secondary and young adult English language learners.

Session 1: Big ideas for little minds! STEAM in the YL EFL class
Speaker: Eugenia Dell'Osa (Argentina)
13:00 - 14:00 (UK time) November 10, 2023
STEAM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths. It’s an interdisciplinary integrated approach to learning that encourages students to think more broadly about real-world problems. This workshop is aimed at giving practical STEAM ideas to English teachers in kindergarten and lower primary. I will start by taking a look at the benefits of STEAM and it will provide teachers with hands-on activities to put into practice in online and face-to-face classes. Finally, we will analyze whether to choose to include STEAM activities in your lesson plans or choose STEAM as a whole project in your everyday teaching!

Session 2: Piloting PBL in the primary classroom
Speaker: Ahisha Haneef (Sri Lanka)
14:15 - 15:15 (UK time) November 10, 2023
This presentation will be based on my first-hand experience of a classroom project using the principles of Project Based Learning with primary learners aged 10-11. The project was tied to the topic of music, and it challenged learners to take on the role of sound engineers to address a real-world problem – sound pollution. They had to design a pair of soundproof ear mufflers and advertise the product by creating a TV commercial. In this session, I will share a breakdown of the planning stages, assessments, and examples of successful projects.

Session 3: Teaching your students to learn and unlearn
Speaker: Manal Sabbah (Saudi Arabia/Canada)
15:30 - 16:30 (UK time) November 10, 2023
This workshop will start with a summary of experiential learning theories and why teachers can benefit from those theories. The next stage of the workshop will look at where and how those theories can be used in the English Language classroom. Finally, we will examine a scenario to put the use of those theories into practice with the help of the attendees. This workshop will give you practical ideas to help you use experiential learning theories to teach English in your classroom.

ENGAGING TEENAGERS DAY

(Macmillan)

Free webinar

“Teachers craft classrooms that are good matches for their teaching styles as well as for learner needs.” Carol Ann Tomlinson

Teenagehood is a time of self-exploration on an epic scale. It’s a time when people find out who they are, what they like, how they behave, and so on. This makes the life of a teacher of teens renownedly difficult. How do you cater for every student, when every student is trying to stand out and carve their place in the world?

In this special one-off event (2 hours total), we will be looking at how to motivate every teenager in your classroom, no matter your context. The event will also include a presentation of the findings from a recent study by Macmillan Education into what makes teenagers tick in 2023.

If you teach teens, this really is a must-see event!

TESTING LANGUAGE LEARNERS REMOTELY: PRIORITIZING EQUITY, FAIRNESS, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
(IATEFL Testing, Evaluation & Assessment SIG)

Free webinar

An IATEFL TEASIG webinar presented by Mark Chapman
The requirement to social distance due to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increased demand for remote or at home testing. This webinar will address the fundamental considerations of equity, fairness, and social justice when delivering computer delivered tests to language learners. Students taking computer delivered tests at home, who are beginning to learn English face particular challenges. If students’ test outcomes do not reflect their language proficiency, but are biased by factors such as, access to technology and challenges following test instructions, the accuracy and usefulness of the test scores may be questioned.
Mark Chapman is the Senior Innovation Researcher at WIDA, University of Wisconsin-Madison. His work focuses on developing new language proficiency tests for K-12 English learners in US public schools and international schools. Mark previously spent more than a decade teaching English in Japan. He has a master’s degree in TEFL from the University of Birmingham and a Ph.D. from the Center for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment (CRELLA) at the University of Bedfordshire.
