Image Credit: British Council Teaching EnglishFor those of us in the northern hemisphere,
I hope you’ve enjoyed your summer holiday! For most, this is the time to prepare for our most intense and busiest period: the start of the new academic year!
If you can manage to fit anything else in
between level testing, staff meetings and setting up new groups and courses, ELT
institutions are making the most of our renewed energy after the break with a
bumper crop of CPD opportunities. These are mainly free and online, but I’ve
included F2F conferences and workshops, so be sure to check the notes for fees.
Please let me know in the comments if I’ve missed anything.

This webinar presents three chapters from a
recent publication, Funds of Knowledge in Teacher Education: Sustaining Local
Diversity Amidst Global Standards, co-edited by Laura B. Liu, Naashia Mohamed,
Ching-Ching Lin, Clara V. Bauler, and Kirti Kapur. This text examines the
integration of funds of knowledge (González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005;
Ibanez-Velez, 1991; Moll, 2019) in teaching and teacher education in the
broader context of glocalization as an evolving dynamic between local spaces
and global connections, local realities and global norms. Cultural, linguistic,
and ecological expressions of funds of knowledge are explored within diversity
sustaining perspectives, studies, and practices in teaching and teacher
education. Contributing authors will present three chapters that emphasize one
of the three funds of knowledge sources highlighted in the text. The
presentations and authors include:
Voices of Identity: Integrating Lived
Experiences in Responsive Education by Aniqa Shah and Nahal Rodieck
Unlocking Multilingualism: Investigations
into the Transformative Role of Translanguaging in South African English FAL
Poetry Classrooms by Grace Mavhiza

SUMMARY
The rise of generative AI has disrupted
many traditional educational practices. In ELT, modes of instruction and
assessment such as essay writing, homework practice, and textbook assignments
are being rethought and program priorities re-evaluated. One emerging solution
is PBLT, or project-based language teaching. PBLT is a variation on task-based
language teaching (TBLT), in which projects can be defined as sequences of
connected component tasks that are arranged by relative task complexity and
that build toward a higher-order meaningful outcome. For example, "Create a
podcast series" can be a PBLT project, which could comprise tasks such as
"Research topics”, "Write a script", "Review a partner's
script”, and so on, where the ultimate outcome is that a real-world-like
podcast series is created. This approach can bypass learners’ use of AI while
allowing for the constructive use of such technology if desired.
This workshop explores practical ideas to
design and set up projects; in particular, it suggests how teachers and
materials writers can create a TBLT-informed project-based syllabus.

SUMMARY
We now live in an age of myriad
opportunities to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI), especially
large language models (LLMs), in a range of educational contexts. From a
testing perspective this has included opportunities to develop secure, quality
test content (including text passages and comprehension question for reading
and listening tasks) using online platforms. In this session, we will discuss
how one Awarding Organisation has implemented a process for item writing which
exploits the available technology whilst adhering to best testing practice. We
discuss how to use AI ethically and efficiently to generate test content,
whilst keeping a place for human creativity and ingenuity. We consider the
limitations and challenges that AI brings to the fore and consider a process of
good practice for content development from the perspectives of both production
and review.

TITLE: Beyond
Intelligibility: Expanding Our Approach to Pronunciation Instruction
PRESENTERS: Various –

DATES & TIMES: Saturday,
25th October 2025 - 09:30 (GMT)
LANGUAGE: English
ORGANISED BY: IATEFL
PronSIG
TYPE OF EVENT: Online
event: Free for all IATEFL Pronsig members, Fee for IATEFL members: £7, Fee for
non-members: £10
SUMMARY
Some real-life communication situations
demand that the L2 pronunciation learned by our students go ‘beyond
intelligibility’. While intelligibility remains a vital, primary and necessary
goal which should continue to be a priority in our everyday teaching, in some
circumstances, we have to do more than ensure that students can be understood
by listeners and that they can understand others. In such cases, we may have to
go ‘beyond intelligibility’ in order to find the most suitable means to provide
support. But what do we mean by ‘beyond intelligibility’? And how might we
identify effective ways to provide that support?
This one-day online event explores the
additional factors which impact learners’ pronunciation and broader
communicative competence, such as the role of fluency, prosody, pragmatics,
speaker confidence, comprehensibility and the role of the listener. This theme
also provides an opportunity to investigate finer points and dynamics such as
interactional nuance and emotional expression in speech which can all be part
of co-constructing effective communication.
This event is intended for educators and researchers who want to enrich their approach to pronunciation teaching, prioritise an evidence-based approach, and learn practical classroom-ready ideas enabling them to address pronunciation in a holistic, learner-centred way.

SUMMARY
We can probably all agree that
interactional skills are important to any L2 learner of English but how do you
go about identifying interactional competence in L2 speech? And how can you do
this on an individual rather than shared basis? In this session we’ll outline
some key points in relation to assessing interactional competence, the impact of
technology on interaction and online interactions. We’ll then focus on what an
interactional practices approach is and how it might help us to unpick
interactional competence for learning and assessment purposes.
