Upcoming CPD Opportunities: Autumn
2024
It’s the beginning of the new academic year
(at least in this part of the world) and once again there is an abundance of (mostly
free, online) CPD opportunities offered by publishers and ELT institutions hoping
to attract our attention (and custom!).
There is some great stuff going on, so much
so in fact that it’s easy to miss something useful (by the latest count there are 14 events in September alone, and some events fall on the same day!). Last year I decided to keep
track by creating a blog post to list the events in date order, with links and
a little info on each. This proved very popular, so – one year on – here is the
5th in the seasonal series.
I update the posts as new events are published, but – as ever - if I’ve missed anything you think might be useful, please let me know in the comments.

SUMMARY
In today’s multimedia landscape, the rise
of fallacious arguments, “fake news,” and unreliable sources makes critical
thinking skills essential not only in one’s native language but also when
learning new languages. This webinar will explore the vital role of critical
thinking in language education, with a focus on practical applications.
During this interactive webinar, Andrew
will:
- - Define critical thinking and
its importance in the language classroom.
- - Introduce a cyclical process
for incorporating critical thinking into teaching.
- - Demonstrate several classroom
activities that encourage critical thinking.
- - Share insights on embedding
critical thinking into the curriculum.
- - Provide an overview of a
critical thinking course taught to 4th-year Japanese university students.
For additional reading, participants are
encouraged to explore Andy Boon and Gregory Hadley’s article in the July/August
2023 issue of MET, “Designing a Book on Critical Thinking”. In the article,
they reflect on the theoretical and practical considerations that shaped their
co-authored book, Critical Thinking (Hadley & Boon, 2023).

workshop focused on mastering the art of lesson observation and feedback.
About the Workshop:
During this engaging session, participants
will develop their understanding and confidence in key facets of lesson
observation. Our focus will be on identifying how to write useful lesson
commentaries, pinpointing actionable areas for improvement, and preparing for
productive post-observation conferences. Attendees will also have the
opportunity to observe a lesson firsthand, collaboratively analyzing its
strengths and weaknesses to deepen their understanding.
Why you should attend:
By the end of this workshop, attendees will feel empowered and equipped to conduct observations effectively within their specific training contexts, ultimately enhancing the quality of teacher education they provide.
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is ideal for early-career
teacher educators who have little experience with lesson observation, as well
as more experienced teacher educators who can share their knowledge and
experience and who may be looking for innovative ways of approaching commentary
creation and preparation for the post-observation conference.
