INCLUSION,
NEURODIVERSITY AND NEUROMYTHS IN ELT – MINI EVENT
(British
Council TeachingEnglish)
Free
online mini-event
About the event
This event will feature three webinars with
ELT teachers and experts from around the world. All three webinars will help
English teachers think about how well they know their learners, by thinking
about issues surrounding inclusion, neurodiversity and neuromyths in the
classroom. The webinars are for teachers of primary, secondary and young adult
English language learners.
Session
1: Making participation in project-based learning more inclusive
Elsa O'Brien (Spain)
Time and date: 15:00 - 16:00 (UK time)
December 5, 2023
This workshop will look at how to include
all learners in project-based learning. Whether our learners have special
educational needs or not, we can help them reach their full potential by
guiding them through the project. In this session we will recall some general
techniques to foster participation, but we will also look at more specific ways
of scaffolding projects and giving our learners the self-confidence they need
to participate in their own way while respecting their learning preferences.
Session
2: Understanding and accommodating neurodiversity in the ELT
Claire Hart (Germany)
Time and date: 16:15 - 17:15 (UK time)
December 5, 2023
This workshop will open your eyes to the
experiences of neurologically diverse learners in the classroom. More
specifically, we will focus on autistic children and people and children and
people with ADHD. We will look at myths that exist around neurodiversity and
learning, and what you can actually expect neurologically diverse learners to
do and not do in your classroom (both on and offline) and the reasons for this.
Finally, we will look at how accommodation strategies can be successfully
implemented in a classroom where some students are neuro-typical and some are
neurologically diverse.
Session
3: Neuromyths in language teaching
Jane Delaney (Spain)
Time and date: 17:30 - 18:30 (UK time)
December 5, 2023
This workshop will start by taking a look at some commonly held beliefs about the brain and how students learn. The next stage will take a look at what's new in the last twenty years of research in our understanding of how the brain works. We will then consider what this means in practical terms in the primary language classroom.

TURNING
INFORMATION INTO INSIGHTS: DRIVING STUDENT PROGRESS WITH AN ONLINE PLATFORM
(National
Geographic Learning)
Free
webinar
There’s no denying that digital
technologies have transformed English teaching in recent years, especially in
the field of assessment. However, while much of that focus has been on
summative assessment, digital platforms offer expanded opportunities for
continuous, formative assessment that allows educators to tailor their teaching
and respond more effectively to their students’ needs. In this interactive
session, we’ll explore the benefits of digital tools for formative assessment
and how they can be used effectively to monitor student and class performance.
You’ll learn how to leverage the power of an online platform to gather
data-driven insights that help you transform your teaching practice and drive
student progress.

Students with interrupted formal education
(SIFE) represent one of the fastest-growing subgroups of English learners. Yet,
they are underrepresented in education research. As a result, most educators
are usually at a loss when it comes to working with SIFE. One approach that may
yield positive outcomes is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). SEL focuses on
developing of vital social and emotional skills for success in school, work,
and life. This webinar will describe the SIFE population and their challenges;
outline the Social-Emotional Learning framework; provide specific teaching
strategies to support SIFE; and help the audience to build confidence in working

DIGITAL
LITERACY: HOW CAN WE HELP TEACHERS DEVELOP THEIR UNDERSTANDING, APPROACH AND
SKILLS?
(British
Council TeachingEnglish)

Free
webinar
Join us on 12 December for a webinar with
Gavin Dudeney and Obaje Chogu Ekele, as they discuss digital literacy in
teacher education.
Who is this webinar for?
Please note the content of this webinar is
not aimed at teachers, and is specifically for teacher educators who have a
role in supporting the professional development of English language teachers.
What is this webinar about?
Everyone understands that digital literacy
is important for teachers. But what exactly does it mean to be digitally
literate and how actually can we help teachers become digitally literate? Gavin
Dudeney, Director of Technology at Consultants-E Ltd, and Obaje Chogu Ekele,
experienced educator from Nigeria, discuss ways of defining digital literacy
and the kinds of skills and understanding that contribute to our ability to
navigate and exploit the digital environment for educational benefit. They
provide practical training room examples teacher educators can use and suggest
ways that digital literacy development can be incorporated into programmes of
CPD for teachers. They also reflect on one of the major challenges to achieving
equitable learning gain – the digital divide; a division that results from
inequitable access as well as from low levels of digital literacy.

SUCH THING AS NORMAL?
(IATEFL

Free
webinar
An IATEFL MaWSIG webinar presented by
Lottie Galpin
The world is wonderfully diverse, but many
ELT materials present a 'norm' that fails to reflect this diversity. Why does
this happen and how can we avoid perpetuating our own sense of normal in our
materials?
In this practical session, we'll look at
the existing 'norm' of ELT materials, why this persists, and the power this
norm holds. We'll also look at five powerful tips for avoiding this norm and
making sure your materials reflect the wonderful diversity of the world(s) we
live in.
Lottie Galpin is an Inclusive ELT
consultant, trainer, editor and writer. She specialises in representations of
mental health, disability, neurodiversity, socio-economic realities, and
creating accessible materials. Before moving into publishing 12 years ago, she
taught in Austria, China, Spain, Taiwan and the UK.

The benefits of accessible ESOL provision
are undisputed: improved communication, increased confidence, enhanced

immigration status, personal circumstances and lack of local provision.
In this webinar, the presenter will share
real-life case studies, the experiences of our learners and, above, all, the
strategies we have used to build networks within our local community to be able
to provide welcoming, accessible, and effective ESOL provision.

HOW
CAN TEACHER EDUCATORS ENHANCE LEARNING AND TEACHING IN ENGLISH-MEDIUM
EDUCATION?
(British
Council TeachingEnglish)

Free
webinar
Join us on 23 January for a webinar with
Ann Veitch, as she explores effective collaborative strategies for teaching
other subjects through English.
Who is this webinar for?
Please note the content of this webinar is
not aimed at teachers, and is specifically for teacher educators who have a
role in supporting the professional development of teachers.
What is this webinar about?
In many educational contexts English is used as a language of learning and teaching for academic subjects. English as a language of learning and teaching can take a number of forms, including English-medium education (EME), also known as English-medium instruction (EMI), and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). There are many considerations and factors which influence the appropriacy and effectiveness of English as a language of learning and teaching – not least of which is the need for close collaboration between language specialists and academic subject specialists.
How can English language teachers and
teacher educators work together with academic subject teachers who use English
as a language of learning and teaching to create environments in which learners
develop both their English language skills and their subject knowledge? Ann
Veitch, English in a Multilingual World lead at the British Council, discusses
how collaborative approaches in English as a language of learning and teaching
contexts can help to improve student learning outcomes.
