IH ELT CONVENTION, 2019

Sophia Mavridi (IATEFL LT SIG): "Lights, camera, action! Film-making in the language classroom."

Sophia Mavridi is a teacher trainer, lecturer and researcher specialising in digital learning based in the UK. She has a special interest in focusing on the pedagogical sound application of technology to language teaching. She also works in the field of media literacies and digital ethics. For more information about the LTSIG, have a look at their website, or follow them on twitter

In her session she presented a combination of simple filmmaking tasks with language objectives. Simple filmmaking in class gives the learner not only an opportunity to use language but also to focus on clear, purposeful and creative goals. It can also be used as an assessment tool.

Background information
Movement and video are powerful tools to be used in the classroom. Why? Because according to Sophia we watch videos more than anything else and we pay closer attention when watching e.g. YouTube videos. It seems more than logical to use video much more in class and also simple filmmaking techniques.

Useful App
The production in class is actually quite easy using Videoshop, an app. that is free and can be downloaded quickly. A camera is not required you just need your cell phone and you can learn it following a YouTube tutorial, for example here. On top, Sophia shows how you can include the entire process into your assessment scheme.

I highly recommend her webpage http://sophiamavridi.com/
Here is the link to her presentation slides for this talk, giving you detailed information how you can use filmmaking in class.

I had the pleasure to work with a Russian English teacher and a native teacher who is working in Germany. You can imagine that I felt extremely motivated and had a wonderful time. We created a little video for students with a grammar topic "comparatives and superlatives". Max, the Russian English teacher took over the role of a cameraman. He promised to send me the edited result and hopefully very soon you'll be able to watch it as well.

Smashing workshop and conference in general.
